Findlay Customs was challenged with turning a 1970’s Airstream trailer destined for the salvage yard
into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece anyone would love to hang out and have a cold one after a day out in
the wilderness.

1978 Airstream Trailer Excella Full Interior Restoration

The thought was simple, the owners were looking for a “Vintage Airstream look and feel” on the outside
but transform the inside into “Something warm and comfortable, with a farm house design.” Unlike your
average camper trail roaming across the great land, this one was destined to spend its retiring days
parked outside the newly constructed silo inspired building at the CR Campground.

During the design process the owner stated: “We just want somewhere cool to hang out, we won’t be
living out of it.” With no real need for things like a full kitchen or even a shower, though a bathroom is
always a must, it provide us much more freedom with floor plan layout.

More the Merrier

We started by relocating the bathroom to the middle of the design to create to main areas on each end
of the trailer. The rear of the Airstream features a spacious bedroom with a queen size mattress, against
a custom diamond quilted leather upholstered headboard.

With the front area being the first area you walk into and where everyone will hang out, it was
important to create the area people in mind. We started with a custom made U shaped seating area
wrapped a large table to play all your favorite games.

Next we had to have a custom handmade L shaped bar area with a retro mini fridge to keep things chilled. To utilize all the space we could we
added lounge chair fit for a king. All together this area can comfortably seat eight adults, and keep the
entertained with their favorite content on the above bar TV.

To create the theme in the trailer, we took the customers vision of a farmhouse look and hardened up a
bit with industrial design ques, giving a more masculine feel. Then took it a step further by flavoring the
space with a “hunter’s hideout” decor. What makes this project really standout is the details, starting
with the walls and ceiling. We hunted around for real reclaimed barn wood to give that authentic feel
and character, then added galvanized sheet and corrugated metal, old black pipe handles, accents and

Let there be light

Lighting played a big roll I the overall look and feel of the trailer. The two stage lighting allows the puck
ceiling lights to brightly illuminate the area but for a more casual nuance, can be turned off to allow the
individual accent light fixtures to create a more subtle mood. All the fixtures were picked for the size and
style to create the look and feel we were trying to achieve, then the fixture were modified for use with
12 volt LED Edison bulbs.

Some of the furniture was hand crafted like the front seating and headboard then upholstered in
distressed recycled leather; while many items, like the bathroom cabinet and bar tops, were created by
hand-picked coffee tables and sofa table tops that were cut and modified to fit our needs. Doing this
helped to create a hand crafted look but also helped with the time and money budgeting constraints.
Every piece played it roll of bringing this project to life. From the retro blue mini fridge to the artwork on
the walls, adding small bursts of colors throughout the mono chromatic scheme of dark and light woods
and metals. It’s the details that really made this Airstream come to life.
